According to SlashGear, Nando Costa, one of Microsoft’s designers, shared a LinkedIn post that teases what the team is working on at the moment. This news might not come in like big news, but it’s a lot bigger than it sounds, especially since Microsoft has had a strangely long journey when it comes to emojis on windows 11. The company’s first update was originally teased to emoji in July 2021, showing hundreds of new, fresh vibrant 3D designs in a blog post.

In last summer’s blog post, Microsoft emphasized the conscious choice it had to make to not only redesign emojis from 2D to 3D but also animate the majority of them. This is not a small collection of emojis, either.

Microsoft stated that it worked to re-imagine over 1,800 different emojis. All this was done in preparation for the launch of Windows 11, which was stated that occur in late 2021. However, when the operating system finally became available for purchase, users discovered that the emoji that was found on windows 11 was not cute designs that Microsoft teased just some months prior.

Microsoft Journey to Designing New Emojis

Costa talks about the journey that the design team went on when they were designing the new emojis. Emphasizing diversity and inclusivity, the new emojis sets were designed to allow each of the users to express themselves across all Microsoft 365 platforms. While the current windows 11 designs seem familiar, they are actually lacking the 3D factor that truly made them pop.

Some of the newly added emojis got animated, Which Costa also shares examples of in his own blog post. Starting from simple sketches to full-on animated 3D, it seems clear that a lot of work has been focused on perfecting these designs. Costa doesn’t explain why windows 11 current version emojis are so lackluster in comparison, but he acknowledges that the team is working on bringing this original vision to life.

Microsoft Introducing New Emojis

To add to the over 1,800 emojis that the team had to redesign, Microsoft also wants to introduce some amazing new emojis that are supposed to offer an accurate reflection of our lives during the times of the pandemic. Centered around working from home, they are a playful representation of many Zoom meetings that we all had to sit through, complete with a suit jacket and pajamas combo.

The interesting new emojis that were rolled out with Windows 11 was still a change from windows 10, but they were built with 2D designs that just felt strangely lacking. Everything was fresh and new, but the Emoji was not quite there yet. Although many abandoned all hope for an updated design, it looks like Microsoft is yet to give up on giving the emoji a much-needed overhaul.

Making the update from windows 10 to windows 11 is a major change, and the design of the two operating systems is one of the reasons why the Switch does not actually feel very seamless. That is not to say that Microsoft made a mistake with the choices it made for windows 11. It’s new, fresh a lot cheaper, and a lot softer than previous versions of windows, but that does not make it bad.
