The Université Joseph Ki-Zerbo in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, is excited to invite applications for the fifth group of students to join the WASCAL Master Research Programme in Informatics for Climate Change (MRP-ICC) in Burkina Faso.

This program is part of the Capacity Building Programme by the West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL), which is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

WASCAL is a global entity dedicated to fostering interdisciplinary research and academic excellence, with a specific focus on the West African region. It aims to build scientific capacity at the graduate level and provide science-based advice to policymakers in the region on adapting to climate change impacts and managing land use. WASCAL collaborates with various agencies and universities in West Africa to create a platform of excellence for its partners.

Funding for WASCAL comes from the BMBF, as well as multilateral and bilateral partners, and its 12 member countries in West Africa, including Benin, Cabo Verde, Ghana, Nigeria, and others.

The mission of WASCAL is to offer information and knowledge services at local, national, and regional levels to help West African countries deal with the challenges posed by climate change. This is achieved through supporting young scholars in climate, natural, and social sciences, and providing climate and environmental services to member countries.

Scholarship Benefits

WASCAL will offer scholarships to selected students in the Master’s Research Programme in Informatics for Climate Change. The scholarship will be renewed annually, provided the student successfully completes the programme.

The scholarship benefits include:

  • A monthly stipend to cover living expenses and accommodation during the study period
  • Payment of university tuition fees
  • A research budget
  • The loan of a personal laptop computer for the duration of the programme
  • A limited number of places will be reserved for high-achieving students who can cover the costs of their training at a rate of €2,290 per year. In this case, students must pay their own fees.

Eligibility Criteria

To apply for the Master’s Research Programme in Informatics for Climate Change, candidates must have:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree (second class upper division) in a relevant field such as Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Health Sciences, Meteorology, Climate Science, Geography, Biological Sciences, Geoscience, , Economics, Agriculture, Mathematics, Environmental Sciences Statistics, Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Electronic Engineering, Computer
  • Applicants must also meet the following general requirements:
  • Be a citizen of a country that is a member of WASCAL.
  • Strong English language skills are desirable and considered an advantage.

A letter from your current employer (if applicable) is required, confirming that you will be granted study leave for the entire two-year duration of the Master’s program. Letter- employer

You will need to provide a copy of your English proficiency test results, or if you don’t have one, a statement explaining your self-assessment of your English proficiency and justifying your confidence in your language abilities. English

  • The application package must contain 8 to 9 individual files. It is essential for each applicant to ensure that they do not combine multiple items from the list into a single file. Failure to do so will result in an incomplete application, which will be rejected
