Eligibility Criteria

  • To be considered for the University of Essex Scholarships for Africans, you must fulfill the following criteria:
  • These scholarships are exclusively available to students who pay international fees and finance their studies independently.
  • Applicants must have ordinary residency in a member state of the African Union (refer to the definition of ordinary residence below).
  • Scholarships may be granted to candidates who have completed relevant educational qualifications in specified countries.
  • Candidates must hold an undergraduate degree with the specified minimum grade or higher; a higher grade in a Master’s degree cannot be used to compensate for a lower grade in a Bachelor’s degree.
  • Eligible programs are full-time taught Master’s courses leading to MA, MSc, MRES, and LLM degrees commencing in October 2024 or January 2025.
  • Applicants who have accepted a place by 14 July 2024 (for October 2024 start) or 13 October 2024 (for January 2025 start) and met entry requirements will be considered for these scholarships.
  • Each student may receive only one scholarship, which cannot be combined with other University of Essex scholarships.
  • This scholarship covers the first year of Master’s study at Essex exclusively.
  • Scholarship recipients are required to participate in promotional activities to help raise awareness about the scholarship.
  • Students who obtain a repayable loan for their studies will be classified as self-funded.

Specific Requirements by Country:

  • Ghana: Second Class Upper Division (2:1) or CGPA 3.0/4.0 or higher.
  • Nigeria: CGPA 3/5 or above.
  • Other African Union member states: Second Class Upper Division (2:1) or higher (or equivalent per our Postgraduate Admissions selection criteria).
