Your application isn’t simply asking whether you want Oxford. It asks why you fit a particular academic discipline.<\/p>\n

That structure can appeal to students whose interests may change or cross traditional academic boundaries.<\/p>\n

Harvard received 47,893 applications for the Class of 2029 and admitted 2,003 students. That produces an admit rate of 4.2%. 7. California Institute of Technology (Caltech)<\/h2>\n

Caltech ranks seventh globally<\/strong> in QS 2027 with a score of 96.6. This represents a notable rise from tenth in both 2025 and 2026. Caltech is one of the smallest universities in this top group, yet its research intensity gives it an enormous global profile. Its academic identity centres strongly on science, engineering, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and related fields.<\/p>\n

Caltech’s Pasadena location places students in Southern California near Los Angeles and major research institutions. The university is connected to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and other research facilities. Its small scale creates an unusually concentrated academic environment. Caltech reports only 971 undergraduate students in its 2025\u201326 enrollment statistics, alongside 1,398 graduate students.<\/p>\n

Admission is extremely selective. Caltech reported 11,285 applicants for its Class of 2029 and a first-year class of 248 students. The university separately offered admission to 428 students for the incoming Class of 2030 in 2026. Caltech states that its admit rate is under 5% for both Restrictive Early Action and Regular Decision. The university also says the difference between the two rates is negligible.<\/p>\n

That admissions model reflects Caltech’s academic priorities. The university requires applicants to demonstrate preparation in mathematics and science, while its admissions process includes significant faculty involvement. For fall 2027 applicants, Caltech requires the SAT or ACT. However, the university says test scores remain one factor within holistic review. Strong mathematical and scientific preparation therefore matters beyond simply achieving a high test score.<\/p>\n
