The SYFoA Fellowship 2027 is a six-month leadership programme for young Africans who want to turn their personal experiences into meaningful community action. The Support Youth Fellowship of Africa (SYFoA) combines virtual learning, mentorship, peer engagement and project development, with the programme ending in an in-person residency and graduation in Accra, Ghana.

The fellowship is designed around the idea that personal experiences can shape the way young people lead, solve problems and create change in their communities. For the 2027 programme, SYFoA plans to select 35 young African leaders.

About the SYFoA Fellowship

The Support Youth Fellowship of Africa (SYFoA) is a hybrid leadership incubator that focuses on leadership development, personal growth and community impact.

Rather than requiring applicants to already have impressive job titles or formal leadership positions, the fellowship looks for young people who have taken action, served others, solved problems or created opportunities in their communities.

A major part of the programme is its focus on Narrative Intelligence (NQ), which involves examining one’s personal experiences and using the lessons from those experiences to make better leadership decisions and develop practical solutions.

SYFoA Fellowship 2027 Story-Led Project

One of the main parts of the SYFoA Fellowship is the Story-Led Project (SLP).

Each fellow is expected to develop a 90-day community intervention based on an issue connected to their personal experience. The idea does not need to be completely developed when applying. Instead, applicants are expected to present a clear and realistic concept that can be developed during the fellowship.

The project should identify a specific community, address a real problem, and be realistic enough to begin implementing within 90 days. SYFoA encourages projects that can eventually become sustainable through social enterprise, market-driven solutions, or self-funding community models.

Furthermore, the top five fellows with the strongest Story-Led Project concepts will receive direct grant funding to support implementation. Other fellows receive mentorship, strategic guidance, and support in identifying additional funding opportunities.

SYFoA Fellowship 2027 Eligibility Requirements

To apply for the SYFoA Fellowship 2027, applicants must:

Be between18 and 30 years old by the stated application deadline.
Currently reside in an African country.
Have sufficient English proficiency to participate in the programme.
Be available for the full six-month fellowship.
Be willing and able to attend the in-person residency, immersion, and graduation in Accra, Ghana.
Hold, or be in the process of obtaining, a passport valid through June 2027.

Applicants can come from different academic and professional backgrounds, including social development, entrepreneurship, governance, education, technology, creative industries and community advocacy.

Importantly, applicants do not need to hold a formal leadership title. SYFoA says it is interested in evidence of leadership through action, such as solving problems, organising people, serving communities or creating opportunities.

SYFoA Fellowship 2027 Selection Process

The selection process has two stages.

Stage 1: Written application

SYFoA reviews applications based on factors including the depth of the applicant’s story, quality of reflection, strength of the Story-Led Project concept, and commitment to the fellowship.

Stage 2: Virtual interview

Shortlisted applicants are invited to a virtual interview. The interviews are scheduled for 1-15 November 2026.

Moreover, the selected cohort is scheduled to be announced on 1 December 2026, with the fellowship beginning in January 2027.

Is the SYFoA Fellowship Fully Funded?

SYFoA covers a number of costs connected to the in-person residency, including accommodation, meals, local transportation and programme materials. However, selected fellows are responsible for arranging and paying for their own flights to Accra and visa expenses. What Happens After the Fellowship?
