Through a three-year program, the Foundation develops Engaged Leadership skills by providing scholars with unique learning experiences and mentorship from esteemed Fellows and Mentors. By collaborating with individuals from diverse backgrounds and perspectives, scholars learn leadership skills by stepping out of their comfort zones.

In addition to offering generous financial support for doctoral research, the Foundation empowers future leaders to drive innovative change in the Social Sciences and Humanities by inspiring new approaches and blazing new trails.

Scholarship Benefits

The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation offers a comprehensive package to support the development of its scholars. This includes:

  • Financial support: Up to $40,000 per year for three years to cover tuition and living expenses, helping to alleviate the burden of educational costs. Additional funding of up to $20,000 per year for three years to support travel, research, and language learning opportunities, allowing recipients to expand their horizons and gain valuable experiences.
  • Leadership development: Access to exclusive experiential learning opportunities led by experienced mentors and fellows.
  • Language skills: Opportunities to enhance your skills in Canada’s official languages (French and English) and learn Indigenous languages.
  • Networking opportunities: Lifelong membership in the Foundation’s alumni network, connects you with leaders from diverse disciplines and sectors.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:

  • You must be enrolled in or have accepted a full-time doctoral program, with a start date of September 2024 or later, and be expected to complete your studies by 2027 or later.
  • Your field of study must be related to the humanities or human sciences, with a focus on topics relevant to Canada’s future.
  • Your research must align with at least one of the Foundation’s four themes: Human Rights and Dignity, Responsible Citizenship, Canada and the World, and People and their Natural Environment.
  • You must be a Canadian citizen studying at a Canadian or international institution, or a non-Canadian permanent resident of Canada or a foreign national enrolled in a doctoral program at a Canadian institution.

How to Apply

To apply for the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Scholarship, follow these steps:

  • Click on this link to access the application portal: https://fdnpetf.smartsimple.ca/s_Login.jsp
  • Register for an account: Create a new account on the Foundation’s application portal. If you already have an account from a previous scholarship competition, You must submit a new application.
  • After registering, you will be able to create and submit your application for the 2024 Scholarship Competition. The following details will be required:
  • Demographic information: This will be used for statistical purposes and to ensure diversity and inclusion.
  • Essay questions: Answer four essay questions, each with a word limit of 200-400 words.
  • Doctoral project and themes: Provide information on your doctoral project, with answers ranging from 200-400 words.
  • Referees: Enter the name and email address of two referees, including at least one academic referee who can comment on your academic performance.
  • Language skills, education, achievements, and experience: Provide information on your language skills, post-secondary education, achievements, and relevant work experience.
  • Transcripts: Upload transcripts for all your post-secondary education (except CEGEP in Quebec).
  • Read and understand Foundation policies: Acknowledge that you have read and understood the Foundation’s policies on prevention of harassment and violence, and code of community engagement.
  • Get recommendations: Once you enter your referees’ information, an email will be sent to them asking them to complete a predetermined referral form on the Foundation’s application portal.
