Mātātoa Sport Scholarships are available to athletes from any sport and academic discipline who plan to enroll in their first year of an undergraduate degree at the university.

Scholarship Benefits

  • Monetary Value: Scholarships are valued at $5,000 or $10,000 for the first year of study.
  • Usage: Funds can be used for accommodation costs at a university hall of residence or tuition fees.
  • Disbursement: Payments are made in two installments, contingent on academic performance and adherence to scholarship terms.
  • Additional Support: Recipients gain access to support services, fitness facilities, and an ambassador welcome pack.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Citizenship: The Mātātoa Sport Scholarship is open to New Zealand citizens, permanent residents, Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents, or international students who have completed at least two full years of secondary school in New Zealand.
  • Academic Achievement: Applicants must have an NCEA Level 2 Certificate endorsed with Merit or equivalent.
  • Sporting Achievement: Applicants must have represented their sport at a regional or national level.
  • Enrollment: Applicants must intend to enroll full-time in their first undergraduate degree at Victoria University of Wellington.
  • Participation: Recipients are expected to join the Student-Athlete Network and a registered university sports club, and represent the university in sporting events.

  • Include a coach’s letter of support, a one-page sporting CV, and a personal statement outlining resilience, leadership, and personal challenges.

Note:

  • Scholarships are conditional upon academic performance and full-time enrollment.
  • The award must be accepted by the specified date; otherwise, they may be reallocated.
  • Mātātoa Scholarship cannot be held in conjunction with other Victoria University of Wellington-funded school leaver scholarships.
