The University of Gondar’s Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program aims to provide 160 graduate scholarships over eight years, starting from the 2018/19 Academic year.

This scholarship is specifically geared towards academically talented individuals who come from disadvantaged backgrounds in five East African countries: Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea, Djibouti, and South Sudan.

The Graduate Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program is designed to empower these scholars by equipping them with transformational and leadership skills, as well as fostering high professional and scholarly competencies.

The program aims to enable scholars to make a significant impact on global, regional, national, and local socioeconomic development trends. Throughout their tenure at the University of Gondar, the program will provide comprehensive academic and non-academic support to the Mastercard Foundation Scholars.

Scholarships Benefits

  • The scholarship provides complete coverage for tuition fees, accommodation/boarding costs, a stipend, and other expenses like books.
  • It offers academic, financial, and social assistance to help recipients grow into competent leaders within their communities. It also includes enriching experiences like summer camps.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants who plan to enroll as full-time students at the University of Gondar. Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Applicants must have completed a Bachelor’s degree in a field that is related to their desired graduate program from a recognized university within the past five years.
  • Applicants must have obtained a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale (or its equivalent).
  • Be a citizen and permanent resident of Ethiopia (and residents of Ethiopia for at least five years at the time of their application);
  • Youth applicants with disabilities;
  • Female applicants who face financial challenges in funding their university education;
  • Earned a passing mark on the Graduate Admission Test (GAT) administered by the Ethiopian Ministry of Education.
  • Candidates who are currently enrolled in any graduate program at the time of application are ineligible to apply for the Mastercard Foundation scholarship award.

Application Procedure

You can choose to either complete and submit your application online  or download a paper application form (in English) . If you opt for the paper application, fill in the necessary information and send it via email to the provided email address along with scanned copies of relevant testimonials and credentials.

The application package should include:

  • A medical document signed by the Health/Hospital Board confirming your disability type and severity level (if evaluated by a healthcare professional).
  • A duly completed and signed Scholarship Application Form.
  • A comprehensive resume detailing academic achievements, non-academic activities, and volunteer experience.
  • Academic transcripts and student copies from elementary school, high school, and university.
  • Two recommendation letters from previous educational institutions.
  • National or resident identification card, or passport.
  • Evidence of economic hardship (for Kebele/Woreda Administrator).
  • A letter from the District Police Office clarifying your criminal record status.
  • Testimonials showcasing your involvement in voluntary community service and leadership roles.
