Each academic year, 21 full scholarships totaling € 34,000 (including tuition fee waiver and monthly stipend) are offered by the Maastricht University (UM) NL-High Potential Scholarship program to exceptionally gifted students from outside the European Union (EU) who have been accepted into a master’s degree at UM.
The scholarship program includes the NL Scholarship, which is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science in collaboration with Dutch universities and universities of applied sciences, and the High Potential Scholarship, which is supported by the Maastricht University Scholarship Fund.
International students from outside the EU/EEA who want to pursue a full degree program in the Netherlands are the target audience.

Eligibility
All candidates applying must be able to meet up with the following requirements.
- You meet the conditions for a Netherlands entry visa and residency permit, and you are a citizen of a country outside the EU/EEA, Switzerland, or Surinam. Before applying, please visit the website to find out where country you must pick up your Netherlands MVV visa from. You can only apply if your current residence permit from another Schengen nation is still in effect as of at least September 2, 2025.
- You are not a dual citizen of Switzerland or an EU/EEA country.
- You have submitted an application to Maastricht University’s participating full-time master’s program for the 2025–2026 academic year.
- You fulfill the particular prerequisites for admission to the UM master’s program for which you have applied.
- You have never taken part in a Dutch higher education program that offers degrees. Applications are welcome from students who have participated in exchange programs in the Netherlands.
- You will be under 35 years old on September 1, 2025.
- As evidenced by your most recent grade transcript, which shows a GPA of 7.5 out of 10 or better, you have achieved outstanding accomplishments during your previous educational programs.
- Please ensure that all documents fit the requirements before beginning your application, as you can only submit it once. Once the application has been submitted, we are unable to add or modify documents.
Well, just 2% of candidates are granted this scholarship, so please be aware that it is quite competitive.
Application Process
You must first enroll in one of Maastricht University’s participating Master’s Programs (MA) to apply for the scholarship.
Additionally, you will obtain a student ID number after submitting your application through Studielink, which you will need to complete and submit the Scholarship Application Form. You have to complete the scholarship application online, attach the necessary files, and submit your application. The application is due at 23:59 CET on February 1, 2025.
Application Deadline
The application deadline is up to and including 1 February 2025, 23:59 CET. Also, the course begins in September 2025.
