Maastricht University (UM) offers the NL-High Potential Scholarship Programme for highly talented students from outside the European Union (EU) who wish to pursue a master’s degree at UM.

This prestigious scholarship provides a full scholarship of €34,000, which includes tuition fee waivers and monthly stipends, for 21 selected international students each academic year.

It is an excellent opportunity for non-EU/EEA students who have been admitted to a participating master’s programme at Maastricht University.

Overview of the Scholarship

The UM Holland-High Potential Scholarship is a combination of:

High Potential Scholarship, funded by the Maastricht University Scholarship Fund, and
NL Scholarship, funded by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science in cooperation with Dutch universities and universities of applied sciences.

The scholarship aims to support international students from outside the EU/EEA who wish to pursue a full degree programme at Maastricht University, located in the Netherlands.

Applicable Courses

For students interested in the fields of financial economics and business, the following master’s programmes at Maastricht University are eligible for the scholarship:

MSc Financial Economics – Specialization in Financial Analysis.
MSc International Business – Specialization in Accounting and Control.
MSc International Business – Specialization in Strategic Corporate Finance.

These programmes are ideal for those who aim to build careers in finance, accounting, and strategic business management.

Scholarship Value and Coverage

The Maastricht University Holland Scholarship provides financial assistance to cover both tuition fees and living expenses for one academic year. The scholarship package includes:

Total Value: €34,000.

Tuition Fee Waiver: Full tuition fees for the chosen master’s programme.
Monthly Stipend: €12,350 for living expenses.
Health & Liability Insurance: €700.
Visa Application Costs: €210.
Pre-Academic Training (if applicable): €695.

This amount should comfortably cover tuition, living expenses, and other necessary costs while studying at UM.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the UM Holland-High Potential Scholarship, candidates must meet the following requirements:

Nationality

Must be a national of a country outside the EU/EEA, Switzerland, or Suriname.
Dual nationals of an EU/EEA country are not eligible.

Visa & Residence Permit

You must meet the requirements to obtain an entry visa and residence permit for the Netherlands.
If you already hold a residence permit for another Schengen country, it must be valid until at least 2 September 2025.

Admission

You must have applied for admission to one of the participating full-time master’s programmes at Maastricht University for the 2025-2026 academic year.

Academic Performance

You should have a GPA of 7.5 out of 10 or higher in your previous academic studies.
You must demonstrate excellent results through your latest academic transcripts.

Previous Education in the Netherlands

You should not have previously participated in a degree-seeking programme in the Netherlands. Students who have completed exchange programmes in the Netherlands are eligible to apply.

Age Limit

You must be 35 years of age or younger as of 1 September 2025.

Application Submission

You are allowed to submit only one application for the scholarship.
Make sure all required documents are ready and complete before submitting the application.

Selection Process

The Maastricht University NL-High Potential Scholarship is highly competitive. Only 2% of applicants are awarded the scholarship each year, making it important for applicants to ensure that their applications are as strong and complete as possible.

Required Documents

Applicants must submit the following documents as part of their application:

Curriculum Vitae (CV): An updated CV outlining academic achievements, work experience, and any extracurricular activities.
Letter of Motivation: A personal statement explaining your academic and professional goals, why you want to study at Maastricht University, and why you should be awarded the scholarship.
Proof of Academic Excellence: Your most recent academic transcript demonstrates a GPA of 7.5 out of 10 or higher.
Admission Letter: Confirmation that you have applied for one of the participating master’s programmes at Maastricht University.
Recommendation Letters: Two letters of recommendation from academic or professional references who can speak to your abilities and qualifications.
Proof of Nationality: A copy of your passport or national identification document.
Other Documents: Depending on your circumstances, additional documents may be required, such as proof of visa status or residency.

Application Process

Apply for Admission to Maastricht University: Apply for admission to one of the participating master’s programmes through the university’s official application portal.
Submit the Scholarship Application: After applying for the master’s programme, submit the scholarship application through the Maastricht University online system.

Important Dates

Scholarship Application Deadline: 1 February 2025.
- This is the final date to submit both the master’s programme application and the scholarship application.
Notification of Results: Maastricht University will inform successful applicants about the scholarship results via email after completing the application review process.
