Fellows will have the opportunity to work autonomously, conducting in-depth research, interviews, and other reporting activities essential for the completion of their proposed projects. The program encourages fellows to delve deeply into their chosen topics, examining the tangible impact on historically marginalized communities, uncovering the underlying systemic factors that perpetuate the issue, and exploring potential remedies and solutions.

Eligibility Criteria

  • They seek talented emerging journalists from diverse backgrounds who have shown a dedication to journalism and community storytelling with a focus on racial equity and social justice.
  • Both employees of news organizations and freelance/independent journalists are welcome to apply.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have between three and six years of professional journalism experience, in any form of media (such as digital, print, video, audio, photo, multimedia), either consecutively or cumulatively.
  • Exhibit a keen interest and commitment to reporting on social justice and equity issues, particularly in underrepresented local communities.
  • Present a publication strategy. (You will need to provide a letter of support from your employer or, if you are a freelancer, a “letter of interest to publish” from a news outlet, as part of the application process.)
  • Uphold ethical and principled journalism standards, ensuring accuracy, fairness, and thoroughness.
  • Show a strong intention to pursue a journalism career.
  • Apply as an individual, not as part of a team or on behalf of a news organization.
  • Reside in the United States.

  • Include a letter of interest and/or commitment to publish from an editor of a news outlet, such as your current employer or, if you are an independent journalist, from a news outlet.
  • Submit a reporting/production plan and, if available, a budget.
  • Share three samples of your published work across any medium.
  • provide the contact details of two professional references.
  • Include your résumé.
