Kochi University of Technology (KUT) Special Scholarship Program for International Students 2024(Funded)

The University of Technology in Kochi, Japan is offering the Special Scholarship Program (SSP) to international doctoral applicants for research projects in the field of Engineering for 2024/2025. The program was created in 2004 to support advanced research by enlisting the help of highly capable students, particularly those from foreign countries.

Kochi University of Technology (KUT) Special Scholarship Program

The university enrolls selected doctoral students for specific research projects every year in April and October. While pursuing the doctoral course in English, these students can work as research assistants (RA) for their host professors. The program aims to expand and strengthen international ties with academic and educational institutions around the world.

Scholarship Obligation

  • The SSP student must allocate a monthly commitment of 50 hours to a specific research project conducted at the university.
  • After each semester, the SSP student must submit a report on their academic progress and research accomplishments to the dean of the Graduate School of Engineering. The dean will review the submitted report and evaluate it accordingly.

Scholarship Benefits

The Special Scholarship Program at KUT has numerous appealing benefits for its recipients, such as:

  • The Special Scholarship Program provides an exemption from the entrance examination fee (30,000 yen), enrollment fee (300,000 yen), and annual tuition fee (535,800 yen).
  • A monthly stipend of 150,000 yen for research project work to support living expenses. Please note that some taxes may be taken out.
  • An amount of 150,000 yen is provided for travel and initial living expenses for international students who reside outside Japan and plan to acquire a “Student” residence status in Japan upon entering.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must fulfill the following criteria:

  • Obtain permission from the leader of the preferred SSP project to apply for it.
  • Hold a degree from an accredited institution that is equivalent to a master’s degree offered at KUT after completing 18 years of education, or be on track to obtain such a degree before the KUT enrollment date.
  • Be no more than 35 years old at the time of enrollment, generally.
  • Possess a strong academic background with excellent bachelor’s and master’s degrees from reputable universities.
  • Demonstrate the intent, knowledge, and research skills necessary to contribute to the research project.
  • Exhibit a high level of proficiency in English (TOEFL iBT 72, IELTS 5.5, CEFR B2, CET6).

  • Original master’s degree academic transcript in English or Japanese
  • An authentic master’s degree certificate in either English or Japanese language.
  • A duplicate of the prospective applicant’s master’s thesis in the English language.
  • Research Outline
  • Two recommendation letters that are signed and written in either English or Japanese
  • Certificate of English ability
  • Copy of passport
  • Copy of publication(s)
  • Provide a document, such as an email or any other form of communication, that demonstrates the consent of the project leader for the prospective applicant to apply for the preferred SSP project.
  • Signed pre-application request

How to Apply

  • Select a research project from the SSP Research Project List.
  • Fill out the Online Pre-Application Request form on the KUT website and send it to the leader of your chosen project.
  • Obtain permission from the project leader to apply for the SSP project. Remember, you can only make one Pre-Application Request per entry period.
  • Keep in mind that the project leader may not contact you if your pre-application request is rejected.
  • Once you receive permission from the project leader, gather all the necessary documents and submit them to KUT by mail.
  • Make sure to send the documents before the deadline specified by KUT.
