Ghent University, established in 1817, is a prominent public research institution located in Ghent, Belgium. Known for its commitment to global research collaboration.
It offers PhD “sandwich” scholarships through its Special Research Fund (BOF) for international students from the Global South.
These scholarships enable students to conduct half of their doctoral research at Ghent University and the other half at a partner university in the Global South.
Scholarship Highlights

Tuition Fees for International Students
€2,118 for 60 Credits: Applicable to the faculties of:

€6,540 for 60 Credits: Applicable to:

- Engineering and Architecture
- Economics and Business Administration
- Veterinary Medicine
- Bioscience Engineering
- Pharmaceutical Sciences
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the program, candidates must:
- Be at the beginning of their PhD program.
- Be citizens of one of the Global South countries listed on the program’s eligibility page.
- Have their research proposals jointly submitted by: A supervisor at Ghent University (promoter), a supervisor from a partner university in the Global South.
- Commit to completing a minimum of 36 months of doctoral research starting October 1, 2025.
- Apply as a degree-seeking PhD student (exchange students are not eligible).
- Encourage diversity: supervisors can support a maximum of two candidates per call, provided one is female.
Scholarship Benefits
Recipients will receive:
- Bench Fee: €310 per month for the Ghent University promoter.
- Travel Budget: €8,000 to partially cover operational and travel costs for the student and supervisors

- Prepare Application Documents: Complete the application form (in English), Provide a letter of advice from the Ghent University supervisor on the candidate’s research potential, Include an ethical and biosafety context report for the proposed research.
