Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Okayama Award 2024 (Up to $3,000 Prize)

In 2015, Okayama City launched the ESD Okayama Award to promote Environmental and Sustainability Education (ESD) globally and support its implementation worldwide.

The award is presented annually by Okayama City and the ESD Okayama Award Steering Board, which consists of organizations that have promoted ESD in Japan and internationally.

The award aims to recognize outstanding ESD initiatives, enhance the activities of implementing organizations, and contribute to the spread of ESD, ultimately helping to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 

Benefits

  • The ESD Okayama Award will grant up to two projects a global prize of US $3,000.
  • The prize money is intended to be used by the winning projects to expand further and develop their initiatives.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Any organization worldwide, including those in Japan, can apply for the ESD Okayama Award, as long as they implement ESD activities in local communities.
  • Only one application per organization will be accepted.
  • Projects must be ongoing and have been running for at least two years by April 2024 to be eligible. Projects in the planning stage are not eligible.
  • Organizations that have previously won the ESD Okayama Award cannot apply with the same project again but can apply with new projects.

Selection Criteria

The ESD Okayama Award recognizes outstanding projects that inspire the global adoption of sustainable development practices in local communities. The selection criteria are:

  • Clarity of vision: The project clearly defines local issues and sustainable goals.
  • Collaboration: The project involves multiple stakeholders in a clear implementation plan.
  • Integration: The project balances economic, environmental, and social aspects.
  • Innovation: The project showcases innovative approaches to promote sustainable development.
  • Progress: The project has a track record of activities, documentation, and feedback from stakeholders.
  • Empowerment: The project educates individuals through interactive methods, promoting values, attitudes, and actions that lead to behavior change and community empowerment.
  • Future potential: The project is expected to expand and positively influence other communities in the future.

How to Apply

  • After reviewing the Application Guide, please submit your completed Application Form and required materials to the email address listed on the official website.
  • Make sure to include the name of your organization in the email subject line.
  • Also, be aware that the maximum file size per email is 8MB, so if your files exceed this limit, you may need to split them into smaller attachments to ensure they are received.
