How Will the Child Tax Credit 2021 Monthly Payment Work?

Based on the IRS and the American Rescue Plan Act, the monthly payment for the 2021 child tax credit commences in July and will go on until the end of the year. The taxpayers are allowed to claim the remaining amount on their 2021 tax return next year based on the fact that the monthly payment will only make provision for half of the year’s credit.

If you do not want to receive your payments monthly, you can easily request for full credit when you file your 2021 tax return. After you have opted in, you would get a payment of $300 every month for each child under the age of 6, and $250 for each child age 6 to 17.  A family with qualifications for the full credit with two children ages 5 and 3 would get a payment of $600 every month.

An account needs to be created with the IRS through an online portal to sign up for the payments and the portal will give you access to report any changes made to your tax situation, for example, your marital status or childbirth.  The IRS intends to open the portal in July to assist taxpayers to get their payments every month. The payment time will be dependent on how the program is rolled out by the IRS.
