The British Academy Visiting Fellowships Programme program offered by the British Academy allows exceptional academics from any country to spend time at a higher education institution or research organization in the UK. This program is open to academics at any stage of their career and covers a wide range of disciplines within the humanities and social sciences.
The Visiting Fellowships demonstrate the British Academy’s strong commitment to international engagement. Its purpose is to maintain the UK as an appealing, welcoming, and productive research environment for academics worldwide. The program aims to achieve the following goals:
- Facilitate and establish new connections between scholars from different countries and within the UK.
- Create opportunities and promote the formation of collaborative research partnerships in the humanities and social sciences.
- Support international academics in conducting research and/or professional development alongside UK colleagues.
- Strengthen the UK’s research capabilities in the humanities and social sciences.

- The maximum funding available is £40,000.
Eligibility Requirements
- Postdoctoral level or higher, or equivalent research experience, is required for Visiting Fellows. Applicants should be located outside of the UK at the time of application. Both permanent and fixed-term contract holders are eligible, provided that the fixed-term contract does not end before the end of the Visiting Fellowship. Applications from independent scholars are also strongly encouraged.
- Prior contact with the UK host institution should be demonstrated by applicants. However, it should be noted that the British Academy cannot assist in finding or facilitating contact with a UK host institution.
- The British Academy invites applications from a wide variety of UK host institutions and actively encourages applications from groups that have historically faced disadvantaged circumstances or structural barriers. This includes researchers from low-income countries and female researchers.
