Bishops University SAFS Programme – Overview

Bishop’s University in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada, through the Department of Environment, Agriculture, and Geography is seeking to appoint a highly qualified candidate with a strong interest in sustainable food systems, for a 2-year thesis-based, master’s programme in sustainable agriculture and food systems (SAFS),

Under the guidance of Dr Vivian Valencia (Research Chair in Sustainable Agriculture and Climate Action), the master’s student will conduct an original research programme in conjunction with her Lighthouse Lab, which is staffed by faculty members from the SAFS faculty team, postdoctoral researchers, undergraduate students, and a research assistant.

Benefits of Bishops University SAFS Programme

The programme is fully funded, offering the following benefits:

  • A $14,000 annual salary and $2000 in support for research expenses are provided.
  • In addition, the selected student must apply for the Graduate Entrance Scholarship, which has the potential to award an extra $7,500 annually if it is awarded.
  • Selected student will also be expected to apply for the relevant CGS-M and FRQ scholarships for their second year of study, if they are eligible.
  • The Recipient is anticipated to begin work on September 1, 2024 (but in extraordinary circumstances, a start date in January 2025 would be feasible).

Eligibility Requirements for Bishops University SAFS Programme

The following requirements must be met in order to be eligible for the Bishops University SAFS Programme:

  • Have a bachelor’s degree with a minimum average of 75% or equivalent (3.0/4.0 or B-).
  • A bachelor’s degree in geography, ecology, sociology, economics, political science, environmental sciences, or other related subjects may be obtained.
  • Exhibit fluency in the English language
  • Explain in your cover letter how your experience and education relate to the analysis of food systems and how their research interests connect to the work of the Lighthouse Lab.
