The AI for Climate and Nature Grand Challenge, funded with $100 million by the Bezos Earth Fund, is a worldwide initiative aimed at leveraging advanced AI technologies to amplify the effects of climate and nature preservation endeavors.
The initial phase of grants will prioritize sustainable proteins, power grid optimization, and biodiversity conservation, while also encouraging innovative and forward-thinking proposals to address climate and nature challenges.
Funding
The Grand Challenge aims to distribute a total of $100 million in grants over three rounds. The initial round will allocate up to $31.5 million through two phases.
Phase 1 awards
- Approximately 30 recipients will each be granted a $50,000 seed fund and an exclusive invitation to take part in Phase 2, which includes a virtual Innovation Sprint.
- During the Innovation Sprint, Seed Grantees may benefit from tailored guidance and resources from experts in climate, nature, and artificial intelligence as determined by the Bezos Earth Fund. They will work on developing detailed implementation plans to be assessed by the judging panel.
Phase 2 awards
- Up to $2 million in implementation grants will be awarded to approximately 15 finalists.
- In February 2025, the Bezos Earth Fund and its partners will bring together Implementation Grantees, along with private and public-sector stakeholders, for a summit focused on collaborating on AI solutions for climate and nature. At the summit, Implementation Grantees may have the opportunity to present their solutions, progress, and initial findings to a live audience.
Eligibility Criteria
- The Bezos Earth Fund considers U.S.-based 501(c)(3) entities and global academic institutions as eligible organizations.
- To ensure fairness and inclusivity, eligible applicants can partner with organizations from any part of the world to develop their proposals.
- Proposals submitted by individuals who are not affiliated with any organization are not eligible for consideration.
Selection Criteria
Phase 1
- Impact: Evaluating the depth of the submission’s vision for creating transformative change in the specified climate or nature focus area.
- Viability: Assessing how well the submission leverages modern artificial intelligence capabilities. Identifies practical application opportunities, and acknowledges potential resource gaps, risks, and limitations.
- Suitability: Analyzing whether the submission tackles a problem ideally suited for artificial intelligence solutions.
- Scalability: Reviewing the potential for the submission to be expanded and customized for various global settings. Thereby enhancing its overall impact.
- Societal benefit: Examining the direct societal value generated by the submission. Its inclusivity and fairness for diverse stakeholders, and the presence of risk-mitigation strategies.
Phase 2
- Impact: Determining the extent to which the implementation plan outlines measurable outcomes that lead to lasting impact in the designated climate or nature focus area.
- Viability: Ensuring that the implementation plan acknowledges and accommodates the demands of modern artificial intelligence. Including the necessary resources, expertise, and risk-mitigation strategies.
- Suitability: Confirm that the implementation plan targets a problem ideally addressed by artificial intelligence solutions.
- Scalability: Demonstrating how the implementation plan will be scaled and adapted to different global contexts to maximize its impact.
- Societal benefit: Assessing the direct societal value produced by the implementation plan. Its consideration of accessibility and fairness for diverse stakeholders, and the inclusion of risk-mitigation measures.
