Amnesty International South Africa (AISA) is offering an exciting opportunity for young law graduates at the beginning of their careers.
They are looking to hire a Graduate Governance Fellow to support the organization and its Board of Directors in drafting documents. Conducting research, and assisting with governance and policy-related projects at their Johannesburg office.

About the Position
AISA is searching for a self-driven and independent young professional who is passionate about governance in the non-governmental sector.
The ideal candidate should align with Amnesty’s values and have a history of activism in areas related to human rights.
The fellowship will last 11 months, starting in January 2025 and ending in November 2025. During this time, the fellow will work closely with the Board of Directors, the Executive Director, and staff members, using their legal and policy knowledge to help develop and implement governance policies.
Fellows will also gain exposure to Amnesty’s human rights partners through structured job-shadowing opportunities with law firms or public interest organizations.
Key Responsibilities
Assist the Board of Directors and occasionally the National Secretariat by:
- Researching and drafting governance documents
- Contributing to policy discussions at the national and international levels
- Supporting the Secretariat’s research, advocacy, and campaigning efforts
- Preparing detailed minutes and reports for relevant board meetings
- Providing administrative support as needed
Qualifications and Experience
- A law degree (LL.B or equivalent) or a related degree
- Fluency in two South African languages is recommended
Skills and Competencies
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work with staff at all levels
- Excellent writing and proofreading skills
- Ability to gather and process legal and governance information
- Strong analytical skills and systematic thinking
- Comfortable with public speaking and presentations
- Ability to work independently under pressure and meet deadlines
- Willingness to travel and adapt to flexible working hours

Additional Information

The successful candidate will be informed by 13 December 2024 and is expected to start on 2 January 2025.
