Under the Thomas Jefferson Scholarship Program (TJSP), Tunisian full-time undergraduate students have the chance to attend a U.S. institution or college for one academic year without earning a degree.
By providing a network of young people with the necessary tools to drive constructive change in their communities and professional sectors, TJSP promotes economic growth, stability, and democratic progress in Tunisia through leadership development, professional involvement, and educational opportunities.
Selection Criteria
The TJSP is an open, merit-based competition. The following criteria will be used by the selection panels for TJSP semi-finalists and finalists to assess applications (not in priority order):
- Superior academic performance.
- Declared a desire to aid in the development of Tunisia.
- Demonstrated capacity for leadership and dedication to community involvement.
- Ability to communicate and write in English.
- Adaptability and flexibility in the role of an exchange student.
Eligibility
No applicant is subjected to discrimination by the Thomas Jefferson Scholarship Program on the grounds of race, religion, sex, age, national origin, handicap, or any other protected trait as defined by U.S. law. All 24 of Tunisia’s governorates have produced TJSP alumni.
Also, the Thomas Jefferson Scholarship Program is a merit-based competition that is available to anyone who:
- Is a citizen of Tunisia.
- Resides in Tunisia at the moment.
- Is enrolled at a Tunisian academic institution that is registered as a full-time undergraduate student and in good academic standing at the time of application.
- Is enrolled in their second year of college or above. Applicants cannot be students who are in their first or last year of study at the time of application.
- Students studying architecture who are in their second, third, fourth, or fifth year of study are eligible.
- In their third and fourth years of undergraduate studies, as well as in their second year (preparatory classes), engineering students are eligible.
- Is eligible to obtain a U.S. J-1 visa; is at least eighteen years old by July 1, 2025; is dedicated to staying in Tunisia for two years following program completion in compliance with U.S. Department of State J-1 visa requirements; can obtain a Duolingo English Test (DET) score of at least 100.
- passes the academic year before studying in the United States with a passing grade (also known as moyenne générale).
However, you should please be aware that applying for this program does not require you to take the Duolingo English Test (DET) or the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The DET, which will be administered by IREX and is free for semi-finalists, is only necessary for those who have advanced to the next round.
Application Process
Unless otherwise noted, all questions on the online application must be answered in English. Candidates must complete all application requirements and include the contact details of two references. Two distinct people who can attest to your eligibility as a possible scholarship candidate must fill out references 1 and 2. Professors, advisors, managers, mentors, and others may offer references.
According to the application guidelines, all application documents, including references, must be received in one package by Wednesday, December 4, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. Tunis time.
Going further, the selection committee will only receive complete applications, which comprise two reference forms and a completed application form.
