The 2025 SSRC Next Generation Social Sciences Program application is now out. The Social Science Research Council (SSRC) is now accepting applications for the 2025 Next Generation Social Sciences Doctoral Dissertation Completion Fellowship.
This program offers financial support for doctoral students in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda who are completing their PhDs in social science research. The fellowship aims to support projects that focus on peacebuilding, security, and development.
Fellowship Overview
The Doctoral Dissertation Completion Fellowship provides a one-year break from teaching and administrative responsibilities, offering a stipend of up to US$10,000. This funding is meant to allow fellows to dedicate time to finalize their dissertations, ensuring they produce research that advances knowledge in critical areas. Additionally, fellows will benefit from two annual workshops, which will guide them in refining their chapters and strengthening their academic writing skills for scholarly publication.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for this fellowship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Hold citizenship in an African country.
- Be enrolled in a PhD program or affiliated with a recognized institution in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, or Uganda.
- They are in the final stages of their dissertation and have completed at least two chapters.

Research Advancement
Fellows are expected to complete their dissertations on peacebuilding, security, and development topics within one year. The program supports dissertation work that incorporates evidence-based insights, contributing to significant academic and policy discussions within Africa and globally.
Skill-Building Workshops
Each fellow will participate in a mandatory workshop in July, hosted by the African Peacebuilding Network (APN) and Next Generation program.
African Scholarship and Knowledge Sharing
Fellows will engage with digital forums and social media channels, such as Kujenga Amani, Facebook, and X (formerly Twitter). Affiliated with the APN and Next Generation programs. This engagement promotes African perspectives on issues of peace, security, and development.
Professional Development and Networking
This fellowship fosters connections among a dynamic network of African scholars and practitioners. Allowing fellows to collaborate and share perspectives that influence global discussions.
Fellows gain mentorship from senior scholars in their field and participate in peer-to-peer learning. Which helps them strengthen their academic careers or professional roles.
Through these program elements, fellows develop the skills and expertise needed to contribute meaningfully to academic and policy-focused conversations on key African social issues and beyond.
