Each year, the ANSO-CAS-TWAS/UNESCO PhD Scholarship provides fully funded opportunities for up to 40 scholars from eligible developing nations to pursue doctoral degrees in China for a duration of up to four years.

Each year, the World Academy of Sciences Scholarship aims to select 200 Master’s students and 300 PhD students to undertake postgraduate studies at prestigious institutions, including the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS), and various institutes under the CAS umbrella.

Tuition Fees in China

Tuition fees for international students in China vary depending on the level of study and institution. For undergraduate studies, fees generally range from $2,000 to $10,000 per year at public universities, while private institutions may charge up to $30,000 annually. For MBA programs, fees can reach as high as $40,000 per academic year. PhD program tuition typically falls between $2,008 and $7,700 per year, depending on the chosen university.

Eligibility Criteria for the World Academy of Sciences Scholarship

To qualify for the scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Citizenship: Applicants must not hold Chinese citizenship and must be nationals of eligible developing countries.
  • Language Proficiency: Proficiency in English or Chinese is required.
  • Age Limit: PhD applicants must be born on or after January 1, 1988.
  • Admission Standards: Applicants must meet the admission criteria for international students at USTC/UCAS.
  • Exclusivity: Applicants should not hold another scholarship or take up other assignments during their scholarship tenure.

Notably, applicants who are currently pursuing a doctoral degree at any institution in China are ineligible for this scholarship.

Scholarship Benefits

The World Academy of Sciences Scholarship offers comprehensive financial support, including:

  • Tuition Waiver: Full tuition coverage for the duration of the program.
  • Monthly Stipend: A monthly stipend of ¥6,000 or ¥7,000 depending on whether the awardee has passed the qualification test arranged by the university.
  • Accommodation: Coverage of campus accommodation costs for international students.
  • Additional Financial Support: Health insurance, Waiver of application fees, An international travel allowance for one trip from the awardee’s home country to China, A one-time visa fee.

It is essential to note that awardees already residing in China at the time of application will not be eligible for travel subsidies. All scholarship recipients are required to undergo centralized training in Chinese language and culture, complete all required credits, and successfully conduct their practical research and thesis work at USTC/UCAS or CAS institutes.

Consequences for Non-Compliance

Awardees who do not pass the qualification test or annual assessment may face severe repercussions, including:

  • Termination of the scholarship.
  • Discontinuation of doctoral studies.
  • Receipt of a certificate of attendance rather than a formal doctoral degree.
  • Mandatory compliance with Chinese laws and USTC/UCAS regulations.
