The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) guide efforts towards a sustainable future for all. The Equity and Merit Scholarships program seeks to empower young professionals in the Global South to create solutions that meet these interconnected goals.
These scholarships are for academically excellent students who can significantly contribute to sustainable development in their home countries. They are intended for those who cannot afford to study in Manchester without financial assistance.

Benefits
Selected candidates for this scholarship program will receive the following benefits:
- Number of Scholarships: 40 scholarships for the 2025/26 academic year, with 30 for full-time study and 10 for online study.
- Courses and Countries: Scholarships are available for selected courses for students from Rwanda, Ethiopia, Uganda, Malawi, Zimbabwe, and Tanzania.
- Tuition Fees: Full tuition fees for the entire duration of the degree program.
- In-Campus Scholarship Benefits: For students studying in Manchester, the award includes return international airfares, living expenses, and visas.
Eligibility
Prospective candidates must meet the following criteria to be considered for the University of Manchester Equity and Merit Scholarships:
- Citizenship and Residency: Applicants must be citizens and residents of Rwanda applying for postgraduate study in the UK.
- Professional Experience: At least two years of post-graduation professional experience related to the chosen field of study.
- Academic Excellence: A bachelor’s degree with an overall excellent grade, typically in the top 10% of the class.
- Previous Studies: No prior studies outside Africa, except for training lasting six months or less.
- Commitment to Return: Must commit to returning home and demonstrate the potential to positively impact Rwanda’s future.
- English Proficiency: Candidates must prove English proficiency results ( IELTS Academic, Internet-based TOEFL). Please note that each master’s program on the scholarship list may have its own English test score requirements.
