Overview

Applications are now officially open for the 2025/2026 PTDF Overseas Postgraduate Scholarship Scheme. The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), a government agency under the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources, is offering fully funded scholarships for Nigerians to pursue Master’s and PhD degrees abroad.

This initiative supports high-performing students in building advanced skills and contributing to Nigeria’s oil and gas sector. Scholarships are available at carefully selected universities in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Malaysia.

What the Scholarship Covers

Successful candidates will receive full sponsorship, which includes:

  • Flight tickets
  • Health insurance
  • Tuition and bench fees (where applicable)
  • Living and accommodation allowances

Eligible Programs & Guidelines

  • Only PTDF-approved courses are allowed.
  • The course must align with the oil and gas industry and must relate to your previous academic background.
  • Applications to multiple programs or institutions will lead to automatic disqualification.
  • If you’ve already received a PTDF scholarship for the same or lower category, you are not eligible.
  • Candidates already benefiting from other scholarships are not allowed to apply.

Eligibility Criteria

MSc Applicants Must:

  • Have a minimum of Second Class Upper (2.1) in a first degree, or 2.2 with relevant work experience
  • Have completed NYSC
  • Be computer literate
  • Hold 5 O-level credits including English and Mathematics
  • Write a statement of purpose (max 500 words) explaining the relevance of the proposed course to Nigeria’s development
  • Have a verified National Identity Number (NIN)

PhD Applicants Must:

  • Have completed NYSC
  • Be computer literate
  • Hold 5 O’level credits, including English and Mathematics
  • Possess a Second Class Lower (2.2) ina  first degree and a good postgraduate degree
  • Submit a research proposal (max 5 pages) including: topic, intro, objectives, method, and data collection
  • Provide a NIN verified by NIMC
  • University lecturers must submit a VC’s letter confirming they are not receiving other scholarships

Required Documents

All applicants must upload clear scanned copies of the following:

  • First Degree Certificate or Statement of Result
  • NYSC Discharge Certificate
  • O’Level Results with verification PINs
  • Recent Passport Photograph
  • Local Government Identification Letter
  • Master’s Degree Certificate (for PhD only)
  • Proof of membership in relevant professional associations

Selection Process

PTDF scholarships are very competitive. Applicants will be shortlisted based on:

  • Academic performance (degree class, transcripts, qualifications)
  • Relevant publications (PhD only)
  • Membership of professional bodies
  • Quality and relevance of research/study plan
  • Alignment with oil and gas sector priorities

Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interviews across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
