About the SASTE Grant

The SASTE Grant is designed to support post-doctoral scientists from Sub-Saharan Africa in conducting research in Austria.

The program emphasizes collaboration between African researchers and Austrian institutions, aiming to enhance research capacities and foster long-term partnerships.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Be post-doctoral scientists under 42 years old (or under 45 for women with childcare responsibilities).
  • Hold a research position in Sub-Saharan Africa, ensuring the continuation of work at the home institution after the research stay in Austria.
  • Have 3 to 7 years of post-doctoral research experience at a university or research organization in Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Possess a valid employment contract with their home institution for at least two years following the research stay.
  • Not have studied or worked in Austria in the six months prior to the proposed research.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in English or German.
  • Obtain confirmation from an Austrian hosting institution that research support and facilities will be provided.​

Application Requirements

Applicants must submit:

  • A research proposal (6–10 pages).
  • A motivation letter.
  • A detailed curriculum vitae.
  • A recommendation letter from their home institution.
  • Confirmation of institutional support for their research, including a letter from the hosting institution in Austria.
  • Legal documents such as a passport, birth certificate, and a judicial record extract (not older than three months).​
